Reprieve Granted Speed Cameras - Prompts Fillibuster By Senator Mooney 4/09
Today, the Maryland Senate reconsidered the vote by which the Administration's speed camera bill failed (to see prior post click here). Senate Bill 277 - Vehicle Laws - Speed Monitoring Systems - Statewide Authorization and Use in Highway Work Zones would allow the use of speed monitoring cameras throughout the state.
Senator Ulysses Currie, D - Prince George's County, moved that the Senate reconsider the vote by which Senate Bill 277 failed at yesterday's session. His motion by a vote of 28 yeas and 29 nays. (see vote at read more)
Senator Alex Mooney, R - Frederick and Washington Counties, launched extended debate on the issue but was shut down by a motion to limit debate which passed by one vote - 29 to 17. Senators E.J. Pipkin and David Brinkley joined in the short-lived filibuster to advocate that the Senators adhere to the position adopted only fifteen hours earlier when the bill was defeated in the Senate.
However, the bill passed on third reader by a vote of 27 to 20 and will now cross over to the House of Delegates.
